Prussian blue analog (CAS number 14038-43-8) is a cathode active material derived from iron hexacyanoferrate. Prussian blue analogs are generally described by the formula AxM'[M''(CN)6]1−y where A is an intercalated alkali metal. M' and M'' refer to transition metals, commonly Ni, Mn, Co, Cu and Fe. They contain two different redox activity centers, M'2+/3+ and M''2+/3+, enabling a two-electron transfer capacity via reversible alkali ion insertion and extraction. Prussian blue analogs offer a theoretical specific capacity of approximately 170 mAh/g, surpassing the capacities of most transition metal oxides.
Ternary Prussian blue analogs (T-PBAs), incorporating manganese and nickel, can effectively suppress the inherent multiphase transitions observed in conventional PBAs. T-PBAs exhibit minimal lattice distortion during charge-discharge cycling, thereby mitigating structural degradation (capacity retention of 61.2%, 10,000 cycles at 1 A/g).
