(生物谷Bioon.com)

Greater Neural Pattern Similarity AcrossRepetitions Is Associated with Better Memory

Repeated study improves memory, but the underlying neuralmechanisms of this improvement are not well understood. Usingfunctional magnetic resonance imaging and representationalsimilarity analysis of brain activity, we found that, compared withforgotten items, subsequently remembered faces and words showedgreater similarity in neural activation across multiple study inmany brain regions, including (but not limited to) the regionswhose mean activities were correlated with subsequent memory. Thisresult addresses a longstanding debate in the study of memory byshowing that successful episodic memory encoding occurs when thesame neural representations are more precisely reactivated acrossstudy episodes, rather than when patterns of activation are morevariable across time.
